Louisville Metro: Louisville was named after King Louis XVI of France, in gratitude for French help to the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. The fleur de lis, symbol of the French kings, became Louisville’s symbol as well. This ‘Metro’ logo was launched in 2003 when the City of Louisville merged with Jefferson County to form a new government and larger community.
Louisville Vintage Seal: This seal was used by the City of Louisville from 1949 until 2003, when it was replaced by a new seal representing the merged Louisville-Jefferson County Metro government. The award-winning vintage seal features 13 stars depicting the original American colonies at the time of Louisville’s founding in 1778, and the fleur de lis the city’s namesake, French King Louis XVI.
Looavul, Luhvul: The Greater Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau developed this popular slogan after hearing too many visitors (and residents!) pronounce our city’s name in many different ways. No matter how you say ‘Louisville’, this unique slogan is sure to get a comment.
Keep Louisville Weird: Curious about the message conveyed by those black and white billboards and bus cards? "Keep Louisville Weird" is a grassroots public awareness campaign, quietly started by a growing coalition of independent Louisville business owners who encourage shoppers to patronize, whenever possible, the locally-owned, independent businesses make our community different and special, and to encourage others to do the same.
